Winter 2017 Unit 2: French Revolution and Latin American Independence
U2/A1 - French Revolution Packet
This packet is on white paper...mostly: a few, rare, highly sought after, collectable copies on green paper are said to exist. This gives a framework of the major events and key figures and ideas of the French Revolution.
We started this on Wednesday, Feb. 15 after the Unit 1 test. It is a SOLO item, due on Tuesday, Feb. 21.

U2/A2 - Video Guide to accompany the video 'The French Revolution, Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité'
We will watch this video over the next few days. Due to counselors using some of the days this week to go over course selection procedures, those days will vary from one period to the next. If you are swept away by the amazingness of this item, or your friends luck out and get to see it sooner than you, you can watch ahead here/catch up here.
(Go ahead--binge on French history, I dare you.)

2 Extra Credit Options for this Unit
#1 'Time of Terror' 5 points are possible for this--if you get through all the questions, and after we (briefly) chat about how it went, etc. (forgot to mention that in class--sorry if that's a deal breaker, but it is a required part of the exercise).
This is the item described in class where you read excerpts from a historical novel set in Paris during the Reign of Terror, with the main character being a young ship's captain on a secret mission for Great Britain to help flood France with counterfeit versions of French money to undermine the revolutionary government of France. In addition to its fictional characters the novel features real historical figures. I hope you'll find enough explanation in the hand-out (there's a plot summary and a brief description for each of the major characters) to enjoy the excerpts. Be sure to print out both the excerpts and the questions about them.
Here's is the AADL's listing for the book if you decide to read the whole thing:

#2 'War Walks' with Richard Holmes--about the Battle of Waterloo
For 3 pts. of Extra Credit answer the following:
|
The video above is not an assignment--but will give a short but rich account of the Battle of Waterloo. If you decide to watch it and write answers to the 3 items at left, I'll give 3 pts. of extra credit.

U2/A3 Notes on the Phases of Revolution, Nationalism, and Napoleon
We started taking notes from these slides on Thursday, Feb. 23. We will continue on Feb. 24. Please note that there are 3 slides worth of information about Napoleon--write small-ishly to fit it in the 'Napoleon' portion of your hand-out.
Use the notes guide (available below) to take your notes. The version provided in class was on pink paper.

More about Waterloo.
|
|
These two videos feature a bugle played at the Battle of Waterloo. The second also touches on a later war and battle: the Crimean War and the Charge of the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava.
In battles like Waterloo a few minutes, when a cavalry charge was made--or repulsed--could set history on one or another path for the next hundred years.
At right is the 1970 movie version of one such moment. (How could the events of the time the movie was made--the Vietnam War, the unrest and change of the 1960s--have influenced the way this moment from 155 years earlier was portrayed?) |
...there's also this early '70's take on that famous battle. |

U2/A4 - Green Packet re Latin American Independence, etc.
This packet was handed out on Friday, 3/11. It is/was a solo item due on Wed. 3/16.
Because questions about the map on the back are hard to answer without seeing the color version of that map, students can skip those and doe them in class using a projected color version of the map, OR they can use the version at right.

|
U2/A5 - Video guide: Égalité for all-Toussaint L. & Haitian Revolution
We started watching this in 1st hour on Tuesday, and in all other hours on Wed. 2/28 and 3/1. We will continue on Thursday. There is a video guide (on green paper).
|
|
